Es ist sein 37. (!) Album und es ist saugut geworden. Eigentlich könnte man in dieser Stelle schon aufhören zu schreiben, aber es gibt noch viel mehr zu sagen. So wie Morrison selbst zu diesem Album meinte: "Ich fühlte, dass ich etwas zu sagen habe." Elf Stückerl Musik sind draus geworden und der alte Grantler brummt wieder quer durch den Genregarten. Gleich der erste Track, "How Can A Poor Boy", hat die Schwere des Van Morrison Blues. Die Bässe wummern angenehm in der Magengrube, nur kurz unterbrochen von dem wimmernden Jaulen der Mundharmonika. John Lee Hooker im Blueshimmel ist sicher stolz auf diesen Song.

Dieser Einstand lässt mich angenehm hinter dem Lenkrad in den Sessel sinken, neben mir mein Sohn, wir sind unterwegs zu einem Sax-Konzert. "Papa wer ist dieser Kerl, der da so undeutlich singt?", fragt er mich. "Der heisst Van Morrison und das is seine neue CD" - "Der klingt cool", meint Junior und schaut dabei in die Dunkelheit hinaus. "Mhm, das ist Blues", sag ich drauf, "und das kann er besonders gut!". Morrison hat diesmal alle 11 Songs alleine geschrieben und sich von Blues über Rock bis hin zum Country durchgearbeitet. Sehr sauberer Klang, wenig synthetisches, erdig, dreckig, gut!

Es ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei. "Lover Come Back" hüllt wunderbar ein, fast balladesk. "End Of The Land" klingt ein wenig wie die Neuauflage von "Days Like This" und fast möchte man beim Refrain mitanstimmen, um dann doch eines neuen Songs belehrt zu werden. Gehen dem Grantler die Ideen aus? Nein, aber wenn einer, der heuer 63 Jahre alt wird insgesamt 37 Alben rausbringt, kann es schon sein, dass der eine oder andere Hook ähnlich klingt. Der Countrytrack "Song of Home" lockert auf und macht den Kopf frei für die letzten beiden wirklich gut gelungenen Songs. "Soul" und "Behind The Ritual" sind Gustostückerl, garniert mit zwei Sax-Solis und schönen Van Morrison-Gebrumme.

Dass er gegen Ende des letzten Liedes nur mehr BlaBla BlaBlaBla singt, spiegelt den Titel des Albums und seine Intention wider. "Es ist heute alles so unglaublich komplex und kompliziert geworden, dass es scheinbar nichts mehr gibt, was man einfach so erledigen könnte“, meint Van Morrison sinngemäß. "Keep It Simple" ist die Antwort darauf: Einfach verdammt gute Musik!

Van Morrison abgespeckt, reduziert und beseelt wie seit "The Healing Game" nicht mehr!

What's it all about?

The ever-enduring crooner turns all TS Eliot on us with a collection of stripped-back, simple songs diverging how it feels to be reaching the twilight of life. Yet Van Morrison keeps all the controlled energy of someone who still has something to pass on to the world.

A mix of jazz, folk, blues, country and soul, the album's one enduring constant is in its title: the acceptance that less is more and that with restraint true quality always prevails.

Who's it by?

A redundant question for anyone with ears they bother to use. After five decades of prolific and heart-felt melodies this is amazingly Van Morrison's 33rd studio album but is shows as much dedication as many new artist's debut.

His first LP of original material since 2005 it's also the first album penned solely by Van Morrison's own hand since Back On Top in 1999 and follows of the heels of last year's platinum selling Still On Top – The Greatest Hits.

Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys

Van already has more than a handful of Grammys in the old trophy cabinet and he's been fifteen years in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but still he's coming back for more and expect Keep It Simple to be right up there come awards night.

So is it any good?

You have to try very to hard to find Van Morrison doing much wrong and even when he's not breaking new ground there's still generally enough going on to keep his music worth a listen.

On Keep It Simple he does more than just tow the line and even offers up one or two gems in the making – Lover Come Back and End Of The Land prove in particular why he's not yet disappeared into retirement.

There's a certain grace to Van's stripped-back band and as always he evokes images of sorrow and anguish but with such beauty and warmth that you can’t help but smile when you hear him.

It maybe that he has already reached his peak, but what Keep It Simple proves is that with the right combination of sensitivity and commitment to his art Van Morrison can still stay ahead the rest of the field and, what's more important, can do it with dignity.
