Foreign volunteer unit fights to save lives in Syria

In September, when northern Syria was still hot enough for sand flies to bite, John Harding sat at a makeshift table of plywood and concrete bricks at a former dairy that is now a base for the People’s Protection Units (YPG). He was telling his favorite story from his second tour serving as a volunteer alongside YPG and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighting IS.

The Syrian city of Manbij had been liberated from IS in mid-August after months of fierce fighting, and the Tactical Medical Unit (TMU), also known by its Kurdish name Yekineyen Bijiski Taktiki — a group of around half a dozen mostly Western volunteers — was approached by a local who was holding one of the many IS mines left in the city.

Kurds may be the victim of the Russian-Turkish cooperation

Lyon II University faculty member and Washington Institute fellow Middle East expert Fabrice Balanche published an analysis in Le Figaro on the aggreement signed among the regime and the groups they are in conflict with by the mediation of Russia, Iran and Turkey. Balanche underlined that there is a risk that the Kurds may be sacrificed as a result of the Russian-Turkish cooperation.

The analysis was published with the title “Syria: Why the ceasefire doesn’t announce the end of the war” and in it Balanche argues that Turkey has joined the Russia-Iran alliance in a tactical move and that the ceasefire was “so far a success”.

Balanche pointed out that the ceasefire doesn’t include regions under Fatah Al Sham (previously known as Al Nusra) control and foresaw Bashar Asad staying in power until 2021, and stated that the “withdraw” of Asad mentioned in the agreement was “just to lure the West and the Gulf countries to the table”.

Balanche stated that the Ahrar Al Sham gang was added to the agreement with Turkey’s imposition and the radicals in the gangs are opposed to it. Balanche foresaw that the agreement may increase the divide and divisions among the anti-regime groups, primarily Ahrar Al Sham, and underlined that that was in line with the military goals of the Asad regime.

Iraqi Kurdistan oil a slippery issue

Iraqi Kurdistan has been shipping oil to Turkey without Baghdad's knowledge, resulting in Iraq violating an OPEC agreement, according to accusations leveled Jan. 3 by Iraq's prime minister. Also, Iraq recently confirmed that a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) minister had offered to sell oil fields to Turkey for $5 billion, again without consulting Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh plans to visit Iraqi Oil Minister Jabbar al-Luaibi next week to discuss cooperative projects related to oil and gas. Chief among these is the establishment of an oil pipeline from the province of Sulaimaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan to Iranian territory.

Kurdish President hosts Turkey’s PM, discuss PKK withdrawal from Sinjar

Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım on Sunday met Kurdish President Masoud Barzani in Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, to discuss recent developments in the region.

The withdrawal of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and affiliated groups from the Yezidi region of Shingal/Sinjar in northern Iraq was at the top of the Erbil meeting’s agenda.

Barzani and Yildirim have also discussed the developments of the fight against ISIS.

Turkey’s PM also stressed the importance of the Turkish-Kurdish cooperation in the Bashiqa military base in northern Iraq.

Êzidîs call upon the PKK and the worl

The Democratic Êzidî Society Coordination had held a meeting, with the participation of more than 60 delegates from across Kurdistan, Europe, Russia and Armenia, on Mount Shengal between December 25-28. The coordination issued the final declaration of this meeting, where it described the PKK as the hope of Êzidî people and called upon the guerillas to not withdraw from Shengal.

‘MASSACRES ARE NOT OUR FATE’

In its declaration, the coordination emphasized that massacres are not the fate of Êzidî people, who now want to put an end to massacres. For this purpose, the coordination underlined the importance of learning lessons from the latest 74th massacre and drew attention to the necessity of unity and solidarity. The coordination called for initiatives that would unify Êzidî people and achieve a platform and mechanism that represents the will of Êzidîs.

CALL TO LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL FORCES

The Democratic Êzidî Society Coordination described Shengal as the motherland of all Êzidîs and called upon Êzidî people to prioritize Shengal in all of their efforts. The coordination called for material and moral support to Shengal, and described the recent debates on Shengal as disturbing and painful. The coordination said ‘Those that have nothing to say to Êzidî people are claiming to take control of the Êzidîs in Shengal and are using the support of the AKP government, who is an enemy of Kurds and Êzidîs. After abandoning Êzidîs to ISIS, they act like nothing has happened and try to establish their rule over Shengal. We demand that the UN, EU and other international organizations function as guarantor parties, and that the PKK, which is an effective national force in the fight against ISIS, continues to defend our society. PKK asked nobody when it came to our rescue, and nobody was able to prevent it then. They came with a humane and national responsibility…We call upon the PKK: If you had not come to our rescue, we could have been wiped or Shengal could have been abandoned if survivors migrated from the city. With your arrival, you became the hope of our people, who have seen you as their security and decided to stay and resist under the most difficult conditions. Many of these people’s problems, such as security and administration, have not yet been resolved. We think that you still have a responsibility and, although you have not made an official statement or attempt, we do not think that it would be right for you to withdraw from Shengal. We believe that this society needs you and that you will be sensitive on this issue.’

New PostErstellt: 28.12.16, 15:02  Betreff: Erdoğan’s Kurdish gangs  drucken  weiterempfehlen

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (RTE) doesn’t only have gangs made up of secret soldiers brought from Eastern Turkistan and Kyrgzystan and Central Asia. He also has a secret gang of Kurds. These gangs made their name when they attacked Aleppo’s Eşrefiye neighborhood in 2012. Since that day, these gangs have been emerging under different names. Most recently, these people have been seen in the plan to invade Syria named “Euphrates Shield”.

After the Rojava Revolution, a secret gang group of Kurds RTE got his hands on through some forces was formed. This gang is activated occasionally and discarded when the deed is done.

RTE chooses the men he picks, turns into gangs and discards from Azaz, Rai, Exterin, Shehba and Bab.

These people were made to form two groups named Azadi and Selahattin around Aleppo first. These groups formed in the beginning of 2012 first made their name heard by attacking the Kurdish neighborhood of Eşrifye. Then they took part in the so-called FSA in Qestel, Cindo, Tel Hemis, Tel Birak, Serekaniye and many other places and attacked Kurdish people, cities, towns and villages.

Bilgen: TAF(turkische armee force)given a mission for “minesweeping” in Syria

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen held a press conference in the party headquarters on the recent developments.

Ayhan Bilgen first criticized Turkey’s Syria policies and said: “The policy in Syria has been wrong from the start, and now Turkey is paying for that mistake. They first negotiated with ISIS, and dubbed them ‘an indignant crowd’. When international reaction towards ISIS grew stronger, they continued their relationship over Al Nusra. Our deputies stated numerous times in the parliament that the relationship built with Al Nusra will cost Turkey greatly. Al Nusra was deemed a terrorist organization in Russia, but state officials have made comments that they don’t see it as such. The whole world knows how ‘moderate’ an ‘opposition’ the FSA is. We will soon see the organizations under the FSA structure dubbed terrorist organizations.”

Erdoğan, once again: We won't allow a Kurdish state in Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has once again confessed that Kurds were the target of their Syria policy.

Speaking at the DEİK General Assembly meeting in Istanbul, Erdoğan said the followings regarding the “aim” of the Kurds in Syria:

“What they aim is to found a new state in North Syria. It must be known that we will not allow such a state to be founded. Without doubt, we are deeply hurt by our martyrs in this process but we must know that there is a need for martyrs and veterans in order for a land to exist.”

Rojava leader: Turkey cannot stop Kurds from advancing in Syria

YBŞ: HRW report not true, we invite them to the battle front

The veil of mystery has yet to be lifted over an alleged airstrike on Nov. 24 against Turkish-backed opposition rebels in northern Syria that left at least four Turkish soldiers dead and several others wounded. The incident, which under normal circumstances would have led to a torrent of indignant chest thumping by Turkish leaders, appears to have been quietly buried, with no mention of it in today’s headlines. Its absence prompts the question, Why?

Kurdish authorities harming recovery of Iraq's Yazidis: HRW

Kurdish restrictions on the movement of goods are harming the recovery of Iraq's Yazidi minority, which was targeted for genocide by the Islamic State group, Human Rights Watch said Sunday.

It said restrictions imposed by the autonomous Kurdish government "disproportionate to any possible security considerations are causing unnecessary harm to people's access to food, water, livelihoods, and other fundamental rights".

It said the restrictions affected the Sinjar area, the main hub of the Yazidis, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority whose faith is despised by jihadists.

The area is theoretically under the authority of the central government in Baghdad, but it is largely controlled by the forces of the autonomous Kurdish region.

What's brewing between the Kurds, Syrian regime?

Among all the complex alliances and shifting loyalties in Syria, the Kurds seem caught in the middle. Common sentiment is that the Kurds are now at a critical threshold of relations with the Damascus regime, and the outcome could be cooperation or, just as easily, combat.

Is Turkey’s fight against Syrian Kurds enabling Assad?

Turkey’s policy aimed at preventing Syrian Kurds from gaining a swath of territory along the Turkish-Syrian border has totally trumped its desire to see the end of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Developments show that Turkey at this point is even enabling Assad’s drive to regain control of Syria.

Why Turkey issued arrest warrant for this Kurdish leader

As Turkey continues with its stance in claiming the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and actors in Rojava (the term Kurds use to refer to western Kurdistan in Syria) are one in the same, Co-chairman of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) Salih Muslim was accused of involvement in the Feb. 17 bomb attack in Ankara. Along with key PKK names, including Cemil Bayik, Murat Karayilan, Fehman Huseyin, Zubeyir Aydar and Remzi Kartal, now there is also an arrest warrant for Muslim.

The German media reported that the state prosecutor’s office in Bremen had initiated an investigation into a Turkish agent conspiring to kill two people active in the Kurdish community outside Turkey.

Will Iraq's Sinjar become new base for PKK?

In its quest to become part of the Mosul operation, the Turkish government has been warning that the predominantly Shiite volunteer Popular Mobilization Units will ethnically cleanse Sunnis from Mosul and its environs. But since that argument has not yielded the desired results of being able to intervene in Iraq, Ankara is now using the argument that the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has turned Sinjar into a base. By declaring that “Sinjar is on the way to becoming a new Qandil, we cannot allow that,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made Turkey’s position clear.

(The article is superficially fine.

The weak point in it is that it equals Barzani (and implicitly his family dominated KDP) with the KRG.

This is patently incorrect.

The PUK and its ally Gorran control Suleymania, Halabja and Kirkuk provinces, both politically and militarily and are closer to Iran and Baghdad and allied to the PKK.

The position of Barzani within the KRG is politically unsure as his present presidency is illegal and disputed by all KRG parties except for his own KRG.)

Raqqa: Syrian Arab fighters pull out of Kurd-led offensive

The Syrian Arab component of forces attacking Raqqa have withdrawn from operations, declaring Kurdish forces had broken an agreement to allow them to lead the charge into the Islamic State (IS) group-held city.

Tukish jets launched a massive assault on People’s Protection Units (YPG) forces in northern Syria on Oct. 20 to prevent the Syrian Kurdish group from taking the strategic town of al-Bab in northwestern Syria.

If the YPG, which is linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), seizes al-Bab, there would be a corridor connecting Syrian Kurdish regions east and west of the Euphrates River — something Turkey has vowed not to let happen.

Amberin Zaman reported that “the strikes mark the second time Turkey has attacked the YPG from the air, raising interesting questions about Ankara’s relations with Russia and with the Syrian regime. YPG sources who spoke to Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity said Turkey is unlikely to have initiated the strikes without informing Russia, whose planes effectively control the skies over northwestern Syria. Russia and Turkey are on opposite sides of the Syrian conflict, but Ankara’s fears of the emergence of a PKK-run Kurdish entity along its borders appear to have surpassed its desire to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad. This is one of the main reasons Turkey was so keen to patch up ties with Russia, and some claim with Damascus, after downing a Russian jet over the Syrian border last year.”

Iraqi Kurds step into Ankara-Baghdad row

The deepening row between Turkey and Iraq took a further turn as Baghdad requested an emergency session of the UN Security Council to review what it considers the illegal presence of Turkish troops at the Bashiqa camp near Mosul, while a top Turkish official claimed the soldiers were there at the request of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Iranian Kurds see no change in Iran, opt for armed struggle

The Iranian Kurds see no difference in the repressive mentality of Iran since the assassination of Sadegh Saharafkani, 24 years ago, and that this is the reason they launched their armed struggle again inside Iran, a senior Kurdish politician from Iranian Kurdistan told ARA News.

On Saturday, Kurds revived the 24th anniversary of the assassination of Sharafkandi, the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party-Iran (KDP-I). He was murdered by assassins at Berlin’s Mykonos restaurant on September 17, 1992, along with two of his deputies.http://aranews.net/2016/09/iranian-kurds-see-no-change-iran-opt-armed-struggle/

New PostErstellt: 20.10.16, 11:35  Betreff: Turkey: Army kills up to 200 YPG fighters in Aleppo  drucken  weiterempfehlen

The Turkish military said its fighter jets hit Syrian Kurdish targets in northern Syria, and killed up to 200 fighters, according to state media.

The jets hit 18 targets in Maarrat Umm Hawsh, a region north of the city of Aleppo, the official news agency Anadolu said.

Quoting the army, the report claimed that between 160 and 200 fighters from the YPG (People's Protection Units) group were killed in the raids on Wednesday night.

A Syrian-Kurdish forces leader, however, said that while Turkish jets and artillery were attacking, no more than 10 fighters had been killed so far.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said at least nine YPG fighters were confirmed killed and 26 people were injured in some 20 raids.

Rojava Coordination condemns Turkey’s attacks on Efrîn and Shehba

Rojava Cantons General Coordination has condemned Turkish fighter jets’ intervention and attacks on Shehba and Efrîn in a written statement. The Coordination stated that with these attacks, Turkey has proven once more that they are protecting ISIS.

The Coordination’s statement is as follows:

“Last night, Turkish fighter jets started bombing the Um Al-Qura, Um Al-Hosh and Al-Hesiye villages in the Shehba region liberated from the gangs by Revolutionary Forces intensely. The bombing occurred a few hours after the Revolutionary Forces liberated 5 villages around the Shehba Dam and one cell tower belonging to Syriatel company form the gangs. Bombing of the region and villages in the Efrin Canton continues. Dozens of civilians have lost their lives in the attacks.

As the Rojava Cantons Democratic Autonomous Administration General Coordination, we condemn this intervention by Turkey. We will defend the civilians in Northern Syria with all our means. Turkey has shown once again with these practices that they are protecting ISIS gangs and that they are not in favor of villages in the Shehba region to be liberated from the ISIS gangs.

With these practices, Turkey has trampled international law. We are calling on the peoples of the world, the UN, US, Russia, international law associations and NGOs to break the silence in the face of this situation and pressure Turkey to stop their attacks on Rojava.

We hope the international community won’t stay silent in the face of the Turkish state’s practices, and we call on all cultural structures in Syria to take a stance against the Turkish state’s bombings.”

As noted Sept. 12 in Al-Monitor, in “Ankara hardening anti-PKK strategy,” the Turkish government, confident in its declaration of a state of emergency and experience gained in its struggle against the Gulen movement, has settled on a strategy of total liquidation of the PKK to the exclusion of attempts at deterrence. In this regard, Ankara last month introduced on the battlefield the Turkish-made medium-altitude, long-endurance Bayraktar TB2 armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The drone's manufacturer, Baykar Makina, is owned by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law Selcuk Bayraktar.

Iranian paramilitary forces arrested dozens of Kurdish activists on Friday amid continuing anti-government protests.

The demonstrations broke out last Tuesday in Iran’s restive Kurdish region. Hundreds of angry Kurds took to the streets in the cities of Mariwan and Mahabad to condemn “suppression by the Iranian authorities.” The protests have now spread to other cities, including Sanandaj, the capital of Kordestan Province.

Shengal Coordination statement on the murder of two peshmergas

Shengal Coordination issued a written statement about the death of two volunteer peshmergas in their 60s in Shengal, and emphasized that the peshmergas’ bodies were found between two KDP Asayish checkpoints.
In its statement, the Coordination recalled the recent statements Turkey has made on Shengal, and underlined that regional intelligence agencies have planned and carried out provocative actions in the region. Shengal Coordination recalled that the disappeared peshmergas were earth digger operators over 60 years old, and said that it was inhumane and immoral to massacre two people that patriotically serve their land, dump their bodies on the side of the road, and steal their guns and vehicles. Shengal Coordination remarked that the statements that accuse the Coordination for the event, that are mostly made on Rudaw media group, show that the killers had a purpose of blaming the Coordination for the murders.

'Settlement schmettlement': Turkish purges target Kurds

Kadri Gursel writes that the Turkish government’s purge following the attempted July 15 coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expanded beyond presumed supporters of Fethullah Gulen to include alleged followers and sympathizers of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The Interior Ministry this month replaced 24 mayors for supporting the PKK, which is a designated terrorist organization in Turkey, as well as its affiliate, the Kurdistan Communities Union. Half of those removed from office are already in jail awaiting trial. Gursel explains that the mayors “were elected in the March 2014 local elections on the ticket of the Peace and Democracy Party, which soon became the Democratic Regions Party (DBP). The same year, the Kurdish movement, teaming up with some elements of the Turkish left, created the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), which aspired for a nationwide outreach. While the DBP focused on local administrations, the HDP won parliamentary representation in the two general elections last year to become the voice of the Kurds in national politics.”

The Ministry of Education then suspended 11,825 teachers for supporting the PKK by “disrupting curfews” and participating in demonstrations that “obstructed the right to education,” Gursel writes.

British YPG fighters 'head to Manbij to face Turkish forces'

A brigade of British volunteers fighting with a US-backed Kurdish militia in northern Syria say they are planning to oppose advances by Turkish-backed forces, a day after senior Turkish officials said all would be confronted as "terrorists".

In a series of statements on Twitter on Friday, the Bob Crow Brigade said that its members were leaving the Raqqa front, where they had been fighting the Islamic State (IS) group, to travel to Manbij, a town in northern Aleppo that the YPG took from IS last month, and where pro-Turkish forces now are massing.
